Working Land refers to two facets of rural landscape: the idea of working the land as a vocation and as a description of productive ground. My family tree includes immigrant ancestors who made a living from working the soil and some of their descendants who carry on this work to the present day. That personal connection to working land inspired the project.
Kathy and Rocky
Rocky's Bait, January 17,2016: I included Rocky’s Bait in this collection because it utilizes another part of the land: water. When I asked Kathy if I could make a portrait of her, she said she would rather not, but Rocky wouldn’t mind. After I photographed Rocky, he suggested they pose together, and Kathy didn’t hesitate. Maybe that illustrates the teamwork they have used all these years working together.
