Working Land refers to two facets of rural landscape: the idea of working the land as a vocation and as a description of productive ground. My family tree includes immigrant ancestors who made a living from working the soil and some of their descendants who carry on this work to the present day. That personal connection to working land inspired the project.

Anderson farm, December 2015: I asked Edward to draw a circular timeline of his career because his life’s journey will bring him back to where he started—the Anderson farm. He looks forward to living at the farm and tending the orchard in his retirement. I think plotting life events on a timeline is a poignant exercise, inviting a review of your life’s story in writing, seeing the moves that cannot be undone.
