Working Land refers to two facets of rural landscape: the idea of working the land as a vocation and as a description of productive ground. My family tree includes immigrant ancestors who made a living from working the soil and some of their descendants who carry on this work to the present day. That personal connection to working land inspired the project.
grinding feed
Kubitz farm, November 2, 2013: Marlys grinds feed from corn and oats as part of her cows’ diet. On the right are the calf pens, boards worn from generations of young stock poking their heads through to take a look around. The low light of the barn’s interior required a slow shutter speed. The blurred motion that I first considered a defect I later came to see as a way to better see the mechanics of her task.
