Working Land refers to two facets of rural landscape: the idea of working the land as a vocation and as a description of productive ground. My family tree includes immigrant ancestors who made a living from working the soil and some of their descendants who carry on this work to the present day. That personal connection to working land inspired the project.

Michels farm, June 29, 2014: The tractors used in Otter Tail County farming are not so big, and often not so new. Their physical and financial scale is appropriate to this geography of small fields interrupted by bodies of water and woodland. This is in contrast with Red River Valley farming a few miles to the west, with its vast unobstructed tracts of land that demand machinery to match.
