Working Land refers to two facets of rural landscape: the idea of working the land as a vocation and as a description of productive ground. My family tree includes immigrant ancestors who made a living from working the soil and some of their descendants who carry on this work to the present day. That personal connection to working land inspired the project.

Lida Farm, August 29, 2014: On my first visit to Lida Farm to make photographs, I had no precise ideas about what I would do, but I did want to show how home and work occupy much of the same physical and cognitive spaces in rural life. The Pesch children were in the house while I photographed their entryway, and when I asked if they thought that an odd thing to do, they replied “yes.”
