Working Land refers to two facets of rural landscape: the idea of working the land as a vocation and as a description of productive ground. My family tree includes immigrant ancestors who made a living from working the soil and some of their descendants who carry on this work to the present day. That personal connection to working land inspired the project.

Lida Farm, May 27, 2015: The Pesches use new methods for doing old tasks, since all successful farms change and adapt. Their home and winter greenhouse are heated with a combination of new solar technology and that most ancient of fuels— wood—burned in a modern outdoor furnace. The Pesches’ ways seem to me both forward-looking and a return to values abandoned by the modern world.
