Working Land refers to two facets of rural landscape: the idea of working the land as a vocation and as a description of productive ground. My family tree includes immigrant ancestors who made a living from working the soil and some of their descendants who carry on this work to the present day. That personal connection to working land inspired the project.
jars of milk
Lida Farm, October 25, 2015: The Pesches keep one milk cow, dividing the milk between the family and a calf. Their refrigerator always contains quart jars of milk, reminding me of visits to my grandparent’s farm as a child in the 1960s. This scene had the elements of a Dutch still life, and to me was just as beautiful: a bowl of fruit, glass vessels and fabric drapery arranged on a table top.
