Working Land refers to two facets of rural landscape: the idea of working the land as a vocation and as a description of productive ground. My family tree includes immigrant ancestors who made a living from working the soil and some of their descendants who carry on this work to the present day. That personal connection to working land inspired the project.

Honer farm , December 1, 2015: The Honer family placed the farm’s fields in the Conservation Reserve Program of the US Department of Agriculture many years ago, making this combine unneeded. Already obsolete by then, it sits unsold and unused, sheltering young trees from the mower. Lichens grow on the north sides of immobile combines as well as the north sides of trees.
