Working Land refers to two facets of rural landscape: the idea of working the land as a vocation and as a description of productive ground. My family tree includes immigrant ancestors who made a living from working the soil and some of their descendants who carry on this work to the present day. That personal connection to working land inspired the project.

Kubitz farm, December 4, 2015: This dormant field, whitened by the season’s first snowfall, struck me as beautiful. The snow-melting power of the sun has revealed the patterned marks of cultivation. A stripe of soil-building manure cleared from the dairy barn follows the snowy hill’s topography. I made this photograph after sunset, the colors of dusk still lingering in the sky.
