Working Land refers to two facets of rural landscape: the idea of working the land as a vocation and as a description of productive ground. My family tree includes immigrant ancestors who made a living from working the soil and some of their descendants who carry on this work to the present day. That personal connection to working land inspired the project.

Kubitz farm, March 28, 2014: I set up the camera near one of the barn’s few windows, where some daylight would illuminate Marlys. I waited while she made her way down the aisle with the feed; when she reached the spot that completed the composition, I asked her to stop and look up. The tender greeting between Marlys and the cow was a fortunate spontaneous gesture.
