Working Land refers to two facets of rural landscape: the idea of working the land as a vocation and as a description of productive ground. My family tree includes immigrant ancestors who made a living from working the soil and some of their descendants who carry on this work to the present day. That personal connection to working land inspired the project.

Kubitz farm, June 4, 2014: I drew the Kubitz farm property line on an aerial image from the US Geological Survey, pointing out how the space occupied by this farm family—in contrast to that of crowded urban dwellers—affects the meaning of the word “neighbor.” I found tree lines, fences and edges of fields in the aerial view that confirmed my township plat property line research.
